Justice League #1 Review

After the long wait the new DC Universe is upon us with the first instalment of the new Justice League, does the New 52 hit the ground running or is fail to live up to expectations.

Since the relaunch announcement, speculation has erupted onto what direction the DCU is heading, this led to long time readers to worry about the fate of their favourite characters. People were afraid that the books they had been reading for years would be lost in the wind of change but with recent announcements, DC has tried to lay any of those worries to rest.
If that has yet to convince you then Justice League number #1 should do the job, not only does re introduce staples of the DCU it remains true to the characters while giving it a fresh spin that long time readers will appreciate while retaining the most important factor which is making it accessible for new readers to jump in.

Superb
Justice League #1

Justice League #1 Cover
Justice League is set five years prior to what is currently happening in the new DC Universe, it is a story arc that establishes the Justice League’s first encounters with each other. As an issue one this works extremely well as you are on the same level as all the other characters, you are learning about the characters at the same time that they are. Because of this it becomes really accessible for new readers and that is not to say people who have been reading DC comics for years won’t like it, totally the opposite this is a fresh take on the Justice League that will captivate new and old readers alike.

The writing throughout is very cleverly done. It conveys information as the plot is progressing without the action having to pause, everything is told on the move and the information put across is exactly what a new readers needs to know like Green Lantern is not the only Green Lantern but is part of an in tier Corp which protects the Galaxy. The fact that the main focus is on Green Lantern and Batman is good as well if everyone was introduced all in one go the whole thing would feel a weak in comparison, the way Geoff Johns is writing this run on Justice League is all about building characters up for new readers. Because of this Justice League #1 is a good branching off point as you can get a good feel of the core team, if you like Batman you could try out his title same goes for each one of the team.

The plot while simple is enjoyable it gets to the point quickly introducing the main villain of this series without revealing too much. The best thing is the interaction between Batman and Green Lantern. They are both younger and a little more arrogant and wary of each other there is a lot of bickering between the two that is fantastic it fits both characters so well especially for there first encounter.  We see the introduction of Cyborg and another hero that I will leave for you to find out.

Good
DC’s intention of this relaunch is to entice new readers and Justice League is a great starting point for new readers it introduces the characters in a meaningful action packed manner that conveys the right information to get you started.
You cannot go wrong with the art by Jim Lee, for the Justice League his art is simply amazing without it I don’t think the book would be as enjoyable as it is. There is a lot of life to his drawings that just feeds into the story so well.

Bad
I honesty can’t say anything genuinely bad about this issue what it sets out to do it succeeds at doing, if I were to complain about anything it would be purely nit picking.

Final Thoughts

Geoff Johns has produced a great introductory issue for Justice League #1 that new and old readers will enjoy, backed up by the superb talent of Jim Lee that makes the book stand out. This coupling of two powerhouses in the comic industry is a potent mix that bonds well for the future.
For new readers this is the perfect starting jumping in point, I can’t recommend this enough it’s a fun enjoyable book that I read multiple times before writing this review. If you want to get into comics, you can’t go wrong with Justice League #1.
