Flashpoint June 16th

Deadman and the Flying Grayson #1

Out of all the tie ins I had a bit of an interest in this issue beforehand as I’ve been reading through Brightest Day, Boston Brand (Deadman) is a prominent character which I’ve grown to like also with the addition of Dick Grayson in this issue, I gave it a chance and it did not disappoint.
The writing is great throughout with all the characters staying true to form but in different circumstances, considering everything else that is going on this feels very grounded in this universe and just fits in nicely, we get to see a little more from the Amazons and what they are doing which I liked considering so far the majority of the focus has been on Aquaman.
Unlike a lot of the tie ins so far this one deals more with getting away from the war well almost trying to avoid so that is nice change of pace. The issue also fills in a few gaps of some of the major events happening in the Flashpoint universe, it really starts to build momentum but it ends on a bit of a cliff hanger which will get people to buy the next issue but it feels it is a little to abrupt. Overall this is a fun quick read and while it is not essential reading it does setup/ reveal a few things for later issues in this series and the over arching Flashpoint story.

Legion of Doom #1

L.O.D focuses on the character Heatwave, the first quarter of the book deals with the confrontation with Cyborg and the murder of a well known hero which results in Heatwave facing the death penalty in the row, which is a prison created by Green Arrow industries and I could be wrong but this is the first mention of Green Arrow so far.
While there are aspects of this book that are interesting, as a standalone story it feels rather weak and it feels disconnected from the Flashpoint universe. It builds up to an escape but there is no real emphasis on why we should care about anything that is going on. For anyone that is picking up the tie ins I would give this one a miss as nothing essential is revealed that adds to the Flashpoint universe, I could possibly see this picking up in later issues but at the moment this looks to be one of the weakest Flashpoint tie ins.

Grodd of War #1

I’m going to say it, I love the book Grodd is fun in this first issue, he feels unfulfilled without a challenge in Africa he feels ignored by the mass population overshadowed by the war between Wonder Woman and Aquaman. He wants a worthy adversary to go up against even if it means losing, he is literally bored in Africa, the continent is conquered and while everyone is asking him to celebrate, he feels unfulfilled. There is a multitude of great moments throughout of Grodd’s desire for a challenge, I won’t spoil any of the encounters but I will say they do stick out.
By the end it Grodd is set up beautifully to become a major player in the continuing Flashpoint series. I cannot recommend this enough and while it is not, very essential now it does lay down the groundwork for future encounters and at its core is a fun story I recommend picking this up.

Wonder Woman and the Furies #1 Coming soon
